About

After a 25-year career as a freelance garden photographer with my work published in magazines and books world-wide, I am now doing a lot more artwork, occasionally teaching workshops, and leading yearly tours to the gardens of Kyoto.

My photographic compositions continue to be based on the following:

simplicity of line

harmony of proportion

equality of attention

My training to photograph gardens took place in Kyoto, Japan.  During a yearlong stay 1992-1993 I was fortunate to work with garden designer Kinsaku Nakane and photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno, both masters of their art forms.  Through the years I have continued to return to Kyoto as a source of aesthetic inspiration.

Photography is as much a gateway to the inner world of the photographer / viewer as it is to the beauty displayed in the outer world.  A garden is a setting for having this kind of experience on multiple levels – simultaneously sensual, aesthetic and spiritual.  In fact, this experience is the intended result of a well-designed garden.  Can it be faithfully represented in an image ?  This is the goal of learning to see as a garden photographer.

The rational and the lyrical, the formal and the abstract, the known and the unknown  …  this is the world within a flower, and within a Zen garden.  This is the world of the photographic artist.
